At Pivot Charter School, Black History Month is a meaningful, month-long journey of learning, reflection, and celebration. Throughout February, our students explored the achievements and contributions of Black leaders, innovators, and creators across history. This week, we brought that learning together in a schoolwide celebration filled with academics, culture, movement, and community.
A Showcase of Month-Long Learning
Over the past several weeks, students researched historical figures, created visual displays, wrote reflections, and studied key moments in Black history. Teachers facilitated thoughtful class discussions about the individuals being studied and guided students as they developed insightful projects.
During our Black History Month Showcase, classes toured the displays throughout the school. As students viewed one another’s work, teachers continued to facilitate conversations about each figure’s impact and legacy, helping students make meaningful connections as they walked through the exhibits.
Engaging Academic Moments Throughout the Day
Between scheduled activities, students stayed engaged in a variety of structured, meaningful tasks that blended learning with creativity. Classrooms became lively spaces where students:
• read and discussed articles about Black historical and cultural figures
• played friendly rounds of Black History Month–themed Kahoot trivia
• completed reflective writing prompts and short creative activities
• worked on artistic pages connected to Black History Month themes
These experiences kept students focused, supported positive behavior, and added depth to the day’s celebration.
Celebrating Culture Through Soul Food
As part of honoring cultural traditions, our Black History Month Committee prepared a Soul Food lunch for the entire student body. Dishes such as fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, baked beans, and cornbread gave students a chance to enjoy a meal rooted in African American culinary heritage. Sharing this lunch together added a warm, communal touch to the day.
Learning Through Movement With Music, Dance, and Community
One of the most memorable parts of the celebration was our line-dancing session with Mr. Felton. With a DJ setting the atmosphere, students learned classic African American line dances—including the Cha Cha Slide and the Biker Shuffle—and filled the space with energy and excitement.
Students laughed, moved together, encouraged one another, and truly had a blast. This portion of the day allowed students to experience culture through movement, rhythm, and shared joy.
Student Presentations to Close the Celebration
To end the day, students delivered presentations inspired by key figures, stories, and achievements in Black history. Their confidence, preparation, and thoughtful explanations highlighted just how much they learned throughout the month.
Honoring History and Building Community
Black History Month at Pivot Charter School is more than a single event—it represents our commitment to meaningful instruction, cultural appreciation, and opportunities for students to explore history in active, engaging ways.
Our students, staff, and Black History Month Committee created a celebration full of learning, pride, and Panther spirit. We are grateful for everyone who helped make this event such a powerful experience for our school community.
